Green Van Outing to an Ancient Spanish Hamlet

Os de Civis, Spain

On Wednesday of Carnaval week, we joined Clare—a retired British expat, Andorran citizen, and friend of Fulbright—in her 20-something-year-old green van to Os de Civis, or what she calls “a tiny, ancient Spanish hamlet”.

Os de Civis is a small village in Catalonia that is really only accessible via Andorra. Because of this, we didn’t need to cross an official port of entry or show our passports.

We drove up the hill, above one of the village’s two hotels, to a beautiful spot for a picnic. We learned that Clare had met all of Andorra’s Fulbrighters in its 18 year history. She told us stories of how she used to live in a 1920s dutch sailboat and travelled around South East Asia. Her and her husband were tired of having to renew their visas and they came to learn about Andorra from a newspaper article wrapped around a baguette in Singapore.

If you’re ever a Fulbrighter or expat in Andorra, I highly recommend getting to know Clare for her fantastic stories, and because every week she puts together a list of the cultural activities happening in Andorra. Thanks to this we’ve been better able to get to know Andorra!
